Professor Phillip Barak and Mauricio Avila, PhD, began working together in 1995, when Dr. Avila started graduate studies at the Barak Lab at the University of Wisconsin – Madison’s Department of Soil Science. Menachem Tabanpour began working with Dr. Barak and Dr. Avila as a high school student in 2002, when he started researching phosphorus recovery in the Barak Lab.

Their research led to the development of NRU’s Phosphorus Recovery Technology. Dr. Barak, Dr. Avila, and Mr. Tabanpour established the company in 2011 to commercialize the Phosphorus Recovery Technology and innovate a platform for nutrient recovery.
